AGEGUARD™ AST-5 is a fat-soluble, xanthophyll carotenoid, a secondary metabolite naturally synthesized by a number of bacteria, microalgae, and yeasts. Astaxanthin is an organic red-colored carotenoid pigment with the molecular formula C40H52O4. This natural nutritional component can be found in aquatic plants, microalgae, red yeast, and even in the feathers of some birds. The structure of astaxanthin was proved by a group led by Professor Basil Weedon in 1975.
